Grok is the only major AI assistant where "how much does it cost" has two correct answers, and which one applies to you depends on where you use it. Pay xAI directly and the ladder runs $0, $30, $100. Pay X and it runs $3, $8, $40. Those are different products with different limits, billed separately, both giving you Grok.

Plenty of people end up paying both without noticing.

Here is every current price, what each tier actually buys, the usage system xAI rebuilt in June that quietly decides your real monthly cost, and the API rates for anyone building on it. Figures come from xAI's own pricing and docs pages and from X's help centre, read on 29 August 2026. This lane moves fast, so treat it as a dated snapshot.

Two things stand out before we get into the tiers.

There is no annual discount. Every other big assistant dangles one, ChatGPT and Claude both shave money off for paying up front, and X Premium itself sells a year of Premium+ for $395 instead of $480. xAI's pricing page lists monthly figures only, with no yearly toggle anywhere on it.

And the gap between the two paid consumer tiers is enormous. $30 to $100 is a 3.3x jump with nothing in between, which makes the middle rung the most consequential missing thing on the page. More on that below, because the missing rungs do exist.

Does Grok Cost Money? What You Get for $0

No, not necessarily. Grok has a permanent free tier, and xAI's own description of it is getting to know Grok and its capabilities "within generous limits."

The free plan includes real-time web and X search, voice mode, connectors and SOC 2 compliance. That last one is unusual to hand out at $0. The live X search is the genuinely differentiated part, since it reads a firehose that Google's index gets to hours later, and I've written before about why that changes what Grok is good for.

The free tier matters for a second reason that only shows up once you're paying. Free-plan limits on Chat and Voice sit outside the paid weekly pool, so when a subscriber exhausts their allowance they land back on free limits rather than a locked screen. Your $30 buys headroom above a floor, not access to a product.

SuperGrok Price: What $30 a Month Actually Buys

SuperGrok costs $30/month. It's the tier most people mean when they ask what Grok costs.

What you get over free:

• Grok Bot access
• Expert-level search
• Connectors

Worth sitting with the price for a second. SuperGrok is $30 while ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google's consumer tier are all $20. Grok is the most expensive mainstream $20-class assistant by half again, and it's priced that way while being the newest of them. You're paying a premium for live X access and for image and video generation being included rather than metered separately, which is a real thing to pay for if you use it and pure overhead if you don't.

There's also no annual option, so $30 is $360 a year with no way to bring it down.

SuperGrok Plus at $100, and the Two Tiers With No Price

SuperGrok Plus is $100/month. It adds 1080p video creation, significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, faster replies, priority access when the servers are busy, and early access to new features.

Here's the odd part, and it's worth knowing before you decide. xAI's pricing page shows three cards for individuals, but the comparison table underneath it has seven columns: Free, SuperGrok Lite, SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy, Business and Enterprise. SuperGrok Lite and SuperGrok Heavy have feature rows but no price. The docs mention Heavy as available to organisations with upgraded licences.

So the ladder has rungs you cannot see the price of from the pricing page. If $30 is thin and $100 is too much, Lite or Heavy may be exactly what you want, and finding out what they cost means going through checkout or talking to sales. That's a strange place to leave a shopper, and it's the single most common reason people land on a page like this one confused about what Grok costs.

Grok on X Is a Separate Bill: X Premium Pricing

This is where most of the confusion lives, so here are X's own numbers, straight from its help centre:

Read those descriptions closely. X Premium sells you limits, not the product. Premium says "increased usage limits on Grok" and Premium+ says "higher limits on Grok," which only makes sense if some Grok access exists below both of them, which it does.

Two practical consequences.

If Grok is a thing you use a few times a week while you're already on X, $8/month Premium is the cheapest reasonable answer to this entire article, and it comes with the checkmark and reduced ads attached. Nobody selling you a $30 subscription is going to lead with that.

And if you're already on Premium+ at $40 and you add SuperGrok at $30, you're at $70 a month, paying twice for overlapping access to one assistant. That combination is more common than it should be, mostly because the two products are sold on different websites by companies that share an owner.

The Weekly Usage Pool: What Actually Decides Your Grok Bill

In June 2026 xAI replaced its per-product limits with something simpler and, for budgeting, much more consequential. Paid users now get one shared weekly usage pool, spent however they like across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and the API.

Different things drain it at wildly different rates. xAI puts it plainly. A chat message needs very little, while "generating a high-quality video or running a long coding task uses far more." The pool resets weekly on a schedule shown in the Usage tab in Settings.

I like the honesty of this design and I think most people will underestimate it. A pooled allowance means the video you generated on Tuesday is the reason chat feels tight on Friday. There is no separate video budget to blow through in isolation. If image and video generation is the reason you chose Grok over the $20 alternatives, the same feature is the thing most likely to leave you rationing text chat by the weekend.

When the pool runs dry, paid features pause until the weekly reset, and you fall back to free-tier limits on Chat and Voice, which sit outside the pool.

You can also buy your way past it. Extra Usage Credits start at $5 from the Usage tab on web and expire one year after purchase. Most coverage skips the next line, which is the one that matters. They are "priced at standard rates, which means the cost per action is higher than the effective rate" inside a subscription. Top-ups cost more per action than the plan you're already paying for. That's normal, and it's also how a $30 subscription becomes a $45 month.

So the real answer to what Grok costs isn't a tier. It's a tier plus however many $5 top-ups your habits require, and the heavier your video use the more of those there will be.

Grok API Cost: Paying Per Token

The API isn't a subscription. You pay for tokens, roughly words in and words out, and there are no minimums.

Beyond text: images run $0.02 to $0.05 each, video is priced by the second at $0.05 to $0.08, speech to text is $0.10 per hour over REST and $0.20 streaming, and text to speech is $15 per million characters.

Two things to notice. Prices double once a request crosses 200,000 tokens of context, so a habit of dumping enormous documents into every call quietly doubles your unit economics. And cached input is a quarter of the normal rate on the flagship, which makes repeated system prompts far cheaper than they look if you structure calls to hit the cache.

For most people reading this, the API is the wrong product. It exists for building Grok into something else, not for chatting. If you're costing out an automated workload rather than a subscription, what AI agents actually cost to run is the closer comparison.

Grok Business and Enterprise Pricing

Business is listed at $30/month. It carries all Grok models, Grok Build access, team seat management, consolidated billing, role-based access control, domain verification, user analytics and custom data retention.

The pricing page doesn't say whether that $30 is per seat or per workspace, and it lists no annual option or seat minimum. For a plan built around seat management, per seat is the safe assumption, but confirm it at checkout rather than in a budget spreadsheet.

Enterprise is quote-only, and covers custom rate limits, dedicated infrastructure, SSO and SCIM, customer-managed encryption keys, a dedicated data plane, data residency and volume pricing.

Grok's Price Next to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Grok is the priciest way in and one of the cheaper ways up. That's a coherent strategy, and it's also why Grok is the single most expensive line in the stack most people actually end up with. Add it up: ChatGPT $20, Claude $20, Gemini $20, Perplexity $20, Grok $30, with DeepSeek free. That's $110 a month for six logins that can't see each other's work, and Grok is more than a quarter of it.

The $6 Version: Grok Plus Every Other Model

The assumption underneath that $110 is that each model needs its own subscription. It doesn't.

Lighter models stretch a lot further than the premium ones, which is worth knowing before you point a frontier model at a task that doesn't need one.

What changes isn't that limits disappear. It's what you do when you meet one.

On a single subscription, hitting a ceiling means waiting for a reset or buying a $5 credit pack at a worse rate than your plan. Here there is no pack to buy: one allowance, and you choose which model spends it. Point a lighter model at the work that doesn't need a frontier one and the same allowance goes several times further — and because the switch happens inside the thread, the model you move to keeps everything above it in the conversation. Spend the allowance down anyway and you wait for the window, the same as anywhere. The bill is what never moves.

• $30 if Grok specifically is your daily driver and you want image and video generation included. Budget for the odd $5 top-up if you generate video regularly.
• $100 if you're producing 1080p video at volume, or if the weekly pool keeps running out before the week does.
• Per token if you're building rather than chatting, and watch the 200K context line where prices double.
• $6 if what you actually wanted was the right model for each job rather than this particular vendor.

That last one is the honest reframe. Almost nobody's real question is how much Grok costs. It's how much it costs to always have the right model available, and answering that vendor by vendor is how people end up at $110 a month with six tabs open and no thread that remembers anything.

Grok is genuinely the best of them at one thing, which is telling you what happened twenty minutes ago. It is not the best at everything, and $30 a month is a lot to pay to find that out one task at a time.
