Is ChatGPT Free? Yes. Here's What You Pay Instead of Money
ChatGPT's free plan puts no cap on everyday text chat, which is more than Claude's free plan promises. The bill arrives in other forms: ads in a growing list of countries, your chats used for training unless you switch it off, and OpenAI's lowest-cost model reading about 12 pages at a time.

Yes. ChatGPT has a free plan, it costs $0, and it doesn't ask for a card. Outside Europe, and in the UK, you can usually type into chatgpt.com without making an account at all.
The free plan is generous in one way that surprises people. OpenAI's pricing page lists everyday text chat as unlimited on Free, with a footnote that usage has to be reasonable and follow its policies. Claude's free plan runs on a five-hour session limit. ChatGPT's doesn't count your ordinary questions at all.
So the better question is what you pay instead. OpenAI says ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people, and a free plan at that scale gets paid for somehow. I count three costs. In the US and a growing list of other countries, Free shows ads. Your chats train OpenAI's models unless you switch that off. And the model answering is Luna, OpenAI's lowest-cost model, reading a window of about 12 pages.
I read OpenAI's pricing page, its terms of use, about twenty of its help articles, its ads launch post and its release notes on 20 October 2026. OpenAI's own pages disagree about which model Free runs, and I say below which one I'm going by.
The Short Answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is ChatGPT free? | Yes. $0, no card, on the web, iPhone and Android. Outside Europe you often don't even need an account |
| Which model is free? | Luna, OpenAI's fastest and lowest-cost model. GPT-6 Sol starts at Plus |
| Is it unlimited? | Everyday text chat is. Uploads, images, voice, data analysis and deep research are capped |
| Are there ads? | In the US and a growing list of countries. A no-ads option exists, with fewer messages and no images |
| Are my chats used for training? | By default, yes. Switching it off is free |
| What does Go add for $6? | More uploads, images, voice and memory, and a window twice the size. Same Luna, and ads can still appear |
| What does Plus add for $20? | No ads, GPT-6 Sol reasoning, faster responses, and ChatGPT Work on every device |
| Is there a free Plus trial? | No standing one. Invite codes, partner promos, US students until 31 October, and recent US veterans |
| Is the API free? | No. It bills per token, separately from any ChatGPT plan |
What ChatGPT's Free Plan Includes in 2026
OpenAI's plan card for Free says "Best for trying out ChatGPT" and has eight lines. The first one says "Unlimited text chats with GPT-6." The other seven start with "Limited": messages with uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research, memory and context, Codex access, and ChatGPT Work access on desktop. The table under the plan cards says what each of those covers.
- Unlimited everyday text chat. The Free Tier FAQ says "Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards." OpenAI doesn't define "everyday", but it lists the tools it meters separately, and plain text isn't one of them.
- A Luna model, plus Think for harder questions. The pricing table ticks GPT-6 Luna for Free, and OpenAI's 7 October release note says "Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna." Its Free Tier FAQ and its models article, both marked as updated the day before I read them, still say GPT-5.6 Luna. I go by the pricing page and the release note, but the family is the same either way. OpenAI's models article calls Luna "the fastest and lowest-cost model" in its family. Free users can pick Think for harder questions, on mobile now and rolling out on the web, and that runs on Luna too.
- Web search, projects, plugins and study mode. All ticked for Free. Projects hold up to five files each on Free, against 25 on Go and Plus.
- Three file uploads a day. "Free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day," says OpenAI's upload article. Documents, spreadsheets and images all count. Audio uploads, added on 6 October, are for paid plans only.
- Image creation, limited. OpenAI publishes no number. Images with thinking, its slower and more careful mode, starts at Plus.
- Voice, limited. Free gets "limited access" to GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, the smaller voice model, counted over a rolling 24 hours.
- Deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work, in small amounts. The deep-research article says an in-product counter shows your remaining tasks. Work, the mode where ChatGPT creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations and works in a browser, is limited to the desktop app on Free.
- ChatGPT in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The 17 September release note says ChatGPT for Word "is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free," and the pricing table marks the Office and Google Sheets extensions Limited.
- Memory, limited. Both memory and memory of past chats say Limited on Free. The Library, where your files live, gets 500 MB.
Free has no scheduled tasks, Sites, interactive tables and charts, or voice with video. It can't create new custom GPTs either, but neither can any personal plan. The Free Tier FAQ says GPT creation is off on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and on 11 September OpenAI announced plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of plugins.
Look at the two kinds of line on that card and a pattern shows. Text, search and study mode are open. Images, files, voice and research, the jobs that take far more computing per request, all say Limited. That's a fair way to run a free plan. It also means the word "unlimited" covers the cheapest thing ChatGPT does.
What You Pay Instead of Money
OpenAI is open about the cost. Its ads FAQ says "Keeping the Free and Go plans fast and reliable requires significant infrastructure and ongoing investment." Here is how a free account pays its share.
Ads, or Fewer Messages
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026, for logged-in adults on Free and Go. Its launch post has been updated three times since. A 26 March update said pilots would start in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and on 11 August it said ads had launched in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, with more markets to come this year. The Free Tier FAQ now says only that ads "may appear in the Free tier in certain countries."
The ads FAQ describes the format. You see "one ad unit" below a response, labelled as an ad, and OpenAI is testing a multi-image ad that appears while ChatGPT creates an image. OpenAI says ads don't change the answers and that advertisers get aggregate views and clicks, never your chats. Ads don't appear near health, mental health or politics, or in Temporary Chats.
What decides which ad you see is the topic of the current chat. With ad personalization on, it also uses "select signals" from past chats and memory. You can turn personalization off in Settings under Ad Controls, and you'll still see ads matched to the chat you're in. OpenAI says personalized ads aren't initially available in the EEA or Switzerland.
The part I didn't expect is the way out. OpenAI's launch post says you can "opt out of ads in the Free tier in exchange for fewer daily free messages," and the ads FAQ describes the same option as "a free, no-ads option with additional limits," meaning fewer messages per day and no access to tools like images. So the unlimited text chat on the plan card is the ad-supported version. Turn the ads off and Free becomes a capped plan without image creation. Neither page says how many messages you get.
Go doesn't remove the ads. The pricing page says Go "may include ads," and the ads FAQ lists Go next to Free. Go's own help article still says OpenAI "may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future," a line the other two pages have overtaken. The cheapest plan without ads is Plus, at $20.
Your Chats, Unless You Opt Out
OpenAI's help article on using ChatGPT without an account answers the training question in one line: "Yes, by default we will use chats to train our models. We recommend that you don't share sensitive information."
That default isn't a free-plan thing. OpenAI's data article names Free, Plus and Pro together as the plans where it "may use your content to train our models," and the pricing table marks training "Opt-out available" on all four personal plans. Paying $20 doesn't change it.
Switching it off takes a minute. Go to Settings, Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone, or choose "Do not train on my content" in OpenAI's Privacy Portal. Either one covers your chats and your Codex tasks. It applies to new conversations, so do it before the first client document goes in, not after.
One exception survives the switch, and it's easy to trigger by accident. OpenAI's data article says that on Free, Plus and Pro, if you give a response a thumbs up or thumbs down, "we may use the entire conversation associated with that feedback to improve our models, even if you have opted out of model training." One thumbs up on a chat about a client's figures can send the whole chat into training.
Temporary Chat is the other tool. Temporary chats aren't used for training, don't appear in your history, don't create memories and don't show ads. OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days for safety.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu are different. OpenAI doesn't train on them by default.
A Small Model in a Small Window
The pricing table has a row most people skip. On Free, the total context window for everyday chat is 27K tokens, and OpenAI estimates the most you can paste in at "~12 pages of text." Go and Plus double that to 54K, about 40 pages. Pro gets 128K, about 250 pages. The window for reasoning is listed as "Varies" on Free and 256K on Go and Plus.
The window holds more than your document. A footnote on the pricing page says the space is shared with system instructions, memories and the conversation itself, so the part left for your input is smaller than the total. A 30-page contract is more than twice what OpenAI says Free can take in.
The same table lists response times as "Limited on bandwidth & availability" on Free and Go, and "Fast" on Plus. OpenAI's Plus article puts "priority access during high-traffic periods" first on its list of benefits. And the model is Luna. Plus gets GPT-6 Sol at Medium and High reasoning, which Free doesn't have at any setting.
Is ChatGPT Free Unlimited?
For everyday text, yes, with OpenAI's footnote attached: "Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies." For everything else, no.
The Free Tier FAQ lists data analysis, file and image uploads, and image creation as tools with their own limits, and then adds a sentence worth reading twice: "If you reach a rate limit for any of these tools, you will need to wait for a later time to use any of these tools." So running out of image creation can also stop you uploading a spreadsheet. The only published number is three uploads a day, and the upload article adds that OpenAI "may lower these limits during peak hours."
ChatGPT tells you when you reach a limit and, where it can, when it resets. Upgrading clears it. "Your usage rates will reset when you update your account to a Plus plan, a Pro plan, or a Business plan," says the FAQ. The no-ads option above is the one version of Free with a daily message cap.
There's one more limit, and it applies to accounts rather than messages. OpenAI's terms of use say it "may terminate your account if it has been inactive for over a year and you do not have a paid account," with advance notice. If you keep anything in a free account you rarely open, export it. Free accounts can do that from Settings.
The full mechanics of every ChatGPT cap, with the error messages, are in ChatGPT limits, and images have their own guide in ChatGPT image limits.
Is ChatGPT No Longer Free?
It is still free. Three things changed this year that make it feel less free than it was.
The ads are the obvious one, since February in the US and in more countries since the spring. The second is custom GPTs. No personal plan can create new ones, and OpenAI has said it plans to retire them. The third is that some new features arrive paid-only. Audio uploads came on 6 October, for paid plans only.
Two recent changes went the other way. ChatGPT for Word arrived on every plan, Free included, on 17 September, and Finances reached Free and Go users in the US on 2 October.

*OpenAI's footnote: "Usage must be reasonable and comply with our policies."
Sources are the pricing page, the voice article and the models article, read on 20 October. Go's own help article says its voice limits match Free's, while the voice article gives Go three hours a day. I went with the voice article, which carries the full table.
Read down the Go column and the $6 buys room, not a better answer. Bigger caps, a window twice the size and scheduled tasks, with the same Luna model and the same ads. Plus is the first rung where the model changes and the ads stop. Which rung fits which kind of user is in ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro.
Can You Get ChatGPT Plus for Free?
Not as a standing trial. Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly, and OpenAI's Plus article says there's no annual plan. What exists is a handful of offers, each with its own conditions.
- Invite trials. OpenAI's promotions article says it may let eligible users invite "friends and family to a free, limited-duration trial" of a paid plan, giving three months as an example. The codes arrive by email or inside ChatGPT, and only some users get them.
- Partner codes. Some phone carriers and other partners hand out Plus codes. OpenAI allows one per subscriber, and some offers only work if you've never had Plus.
- US college and graduate students. OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives four free monthly billing periods of Plus to students at eligible US degree-granting institutions, verified through SheerID. You have to claim it by 31 October 2026, add a payment method, and it renews at $20 a month unless you cancel. My student breakdown has the details, and every AI student discount compares the other vendors.
- US service members, veterans and retirees. If you left active duty in the last 12 months, or will in the next 12, OpenAI gives one free year of Plus after ID.me verification.
- Teachers. ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified US school teachers through June 2027.
- Nonprofits. OpenAI for Nonprofits gives up to 75% off ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. That's a discount, not a free plan.
Be careful with anyone selling "free Plus". OpenAI's promo terms say codes "may not be duplicated, sold or transferred," and that it can cancel them "without refund" if it suspects misuse.
Is ChatGPT Free for Business Use?
For a freelancer or a small business, the free plan raises three practical questions.
Can you use the output for clients? Yes. OpenAI's terms of use say that, as between you and OpenAI, you "own the Output," and I found nothing in them that limits a free account to personal use. OpenAI's own advice is to keep work and personal accounts apart. For a sole trader, the practical version is to sign up with an email address you'll still control in five years.
What happens to client material? The training default above applies, so switch it off before the first client document goes in, and leave the thumbs alone. If you'd rather not depend on a setting, ChatGPT Business starts at two users and doesn't train on your data by default.
Will the account still be there? Free accounts can be closed after a year of inactivity, with notice. The account you use every week is fine. The one you set up for a single project and forgot about may not be.
Is ChatGPT Free on iPhone, Android and Without an Account?
The apps are free to download, and a free account is the same account on the web, iPhone and Android, with the same plan.
Without an account, OpenAI's help article says you can start chatting at chatgpt.com straight away, with limits. "While logged out, you can only have one conversation at a time," and the chat isn't saved, so it's gone when you leave. The feature "is not yet available for users in Europe, except for users in the UK." If you use it signed out, the training switch is in Settings and applies to that browser only.
When Paying for ChatGPT Makes Sense
You hit the tool caps more than once a week. Three uploads a day goes fast if you work with documents. Go at $6 raises the caps and doubles the window. It doesn't change the model or remove the ads.
You want the ads gone. Plus at $20 is the cheapest way. For the occasional chat you don't want an ad next to, Temporary Chat shows none.
You work with long documents. Free takes about 12 pages of input in everyday chat, Go and Plus about 40, and their reasoning modes about 320.
You need better reasoning, Work on your phone, or scheduled tasks. GPT-6 Sol, Work on web and mobile, and Sites start at Plus. Scheduled tasks start at Go. Is ChatGPT Plus worth it goes through the Plus column row by row.
You handle client data. Switching training off costs nothing and works on Free. Business and Enterprise are the plans where training is off by default.
You use ChatGPT a few times a week. Stay on Free. Everyday text is unlimited, and OpenAI's models article describes the Luna-powered Instant setting as "fast responses for everyday questions."
You want other labs' models as well. No ChatGPT plan includes Claude or Gemini. That's the next section.
Every price on OpenAI's ladder, from Free to Enterprise and the API, is in how much does ChatGPT cost.
Where izzedo Fits
izzedo chat's free plan includes GPT-6 Luna, in the same picker as Claude Haiku 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7, DeepSeek, Kimi and Qwen. It needs no card and shows no ads. In the thread below, GPT-6 Luna drafted a public reply to a 3-star review for a two-van moving company. Then Gemini 3.8 Flash read it as a customer deciding whether to hire them, and said the reply needed one concrete fix to be believable.

The second model was right about the weakness and too quick with the fix. Its revision says the company has "updated our dispatch protocol" to send text alerts. That's only worth publishing if it's true. A second model catches the vague promise, but you're still the one who checks the facts.
Agent mode and the 50+ connectors, Gmail, Google Drive and Notion among them, come with the free plan too, and by default izzedo asks you before it runs any tool. The AI providers izzedo uses don't train on your chats or use them for their own products. Some keep them for a limited time for abuse checks, up to 30 days at OpenAI, then delete them.
The $6 Hobby plan adds every other chat model, including GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. In ChatGPT, Astra in the chat tab starts at Pro, from $100 a month, or a Business seat, and Plus gets it only in Work and Codex. On izzedo it's one shared allowance across all models, and top models like Astra use it several times faster than everyday ones, so Hobby is a way to put the hard questions to Astra, not to live on it. The pricing page has the current allowances.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT is free, and for plain text the free plan doesn't run out. That's more than Claude's free plan promises.
You pay in other ways. In a growing list of countries you see ads, unless you accept a daily cap and give up image creation. Your chats train OpenAI's models, unless you flip one switch and stay off the thumbs. And you get Luna, reading about 12 pages at a time, with three file uploads a day.
So use Free for everyday questions, switch training off today, and pay when a cap or an ad gets in the way of real work. And check the date on this post, and on anything else you read about ChatGPT's plans. OpenAI's help centre showed most of the articles I used as updated in the 24 hours before I read them.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes. OpenAI's pricing page lists a Free plan at $0, and its help centre says ChatGPT is free to use. You can sign up at chatgpt.com without a card and use it on the web, iPhone and Android. Outside Europe, and in the UK, you can usually chat before creating an account, one conversation at a time. The free plan includes unlimited everyday text chat, web search, projects, plugins and study mode, plus limited file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work on desktop.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Free, Go and Plus?
Go costs $6 a month on OpenAI's US pricing page. It keeps the same Luna model as Free and may still show ads, but it raises the limits on uploads, image creation, voice and memory, doubles the everyday context window from 27K to 54K tokens and adds scheduled tasks. Plus costs $20 a month and is the cheapest plan without ads. It adds Medium and High reasoning with GPT-6 Sol, faster responses, expanded deep research, and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile. All three plans have unlimited everyday text chat.
Is ChatGPT free unlimited?
For everyday text chat, yes. OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ says free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Tools are capped separately. File uploads, image creation, voice, data analysis and deep research all have their own limits, and the help centre says hitting the limit on one of them can lock the others until it resets. The only published number is three file uploads a day on Free. Upgrading to Plus, Pro or Business resets the limits.
Does free ChatGPT have ads, and can I turn them off?
In some countries, yes. OpenAI started testing ads for logged-in adults on Free and Go in the US on 9 February 2026. Its launch post has since named pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and launches in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. You can turn off ad personalization in Settings under Ad Controls, but contextual ads still show. To avoid ads entirely, OpenAI offers a free no-ads option with fewer messages per day and no image creation, or you can upgrade to Plus or Pro. Temporary Chats don't show ads.
Which ChatGPT model is free?
A Luna model. OpenAI's pricing page and its 7 October 2026 release note say Free uses GPT-6 Luna, while its Free Tier FAQ and models article say GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI describes Luna as the fastest and lowest-cost model in its family. Free users can also pick Think for harder questions, which runs on Luna too. GPT-6 Sol starts at Plus, and GPT-6 Astra in the chat tab starts at Pro or a Business seat.
Is there a free trial of ChatGPT Plus?
Not a standing one. OpenAI runs invite-based free trials that eligible subscribers can share with friends and family, and partner promo codes, for example from mobile carriers. US college and graduate students can get four free months of Plus if they claim by 31 October 2026, with a payment method on file and renewal at $20 a month. US service members, veterans and retirees within 12 months of leaving active duty can claim one free year of Plus through ID.me.
Does ChatGPT's free plan use my chats for training?
By default, yes. OpenAI's help centre says it will use chats to train its models by default, on Free, Plus and Pro alike. You can switch it off in Settings under Data controls by turning off Improve the model for everyone, or in OpenAI's Privacy Portal. One exception survives the opt-out. If you rate a response with a thumbs up or down, OpenAI may use the entire conversation for training. Temporary Chats aren't used for training. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise don't train on your data by default.
Is the ChatGPT API or Codex free?
Codex is included on every ChatGPT plan, Free and Go among them, with limited usage, and OpenAI's models article says Free and Go get GPT-5.6 Terra in Codex. Codex Cloud is not included on Free or Go. The API is never free. It bills per token through an OpenAI API account, separately from any ChatGPT plan, and OpenAI's Plus article says API usage is not included in a ChatGPT subscription.
