Grok 5 Release Date: What xAI Has Confirmed, and What Comes First

Grok 5 isn't out, and xAI hasn't said when it will be. As of 30 September 2026, the newest Grok model is Grok 4.7, released nine days ago.

Everything xAI itself has published about Grok 5 fits in one sentence, from a funding announcement in January. The release dates, the parameter count and the AGI talk all come from Elon Musk's posts and interviews. Two of his dates have already passed. His latest roadmap, posted on 14 September, puts two more models in front of Grok 5 and gives no date at all.

Below, I've kept those two sources apart: what xAI has put on its own site, and what Musk has said. When Grok 5 ships, I'll update this page rather than write a new one.

What xAI Has Actually Said

One sentence. When xAI announced its $20 billion Series E on 6 January 2026, it wrote: "Looking ahead, Grok 5 is currently in training, and we are focused on launching innovative new consumer and enterprise products that harness the power of Grok, Colossus, and 𝕏."

That is the whole official record. xAI's news page has no Grok 5 announcement, and none of its launch posts since January mention it. There's no date, price, plan, benchmark or context window anywhere on xAI's site.

If you go looking, one thing may throw you. SpaceX announced on 2 February 2026 that it had acquired xAI, and the newer launch posts, Grok 4.7's included, call the company SpaceXAI. It's the same company and the same Grok.

Every Date Musk Has Given

Musk runs the company and posts about Grok often, so nearly everything you read about Grok 5 traces back to him. Here is what he's said, in order:

• 7 August 2025, on X: "Grok 5 will be out before the end of this year and it will be crushingly good."
• 18 October 2025, on X: "My estimate of the probability of Grok 5 achieving AGI is now at 10% and rising."
• November 2025, at Baron Capital's annual investor conference: Grok 5 would arrive in early 2026 with 6 trillion parameters, as reported at the time.
• 14 September 2026, on X: "Grok 4.8 will be a noticeable improvement. Grok 4.9 is probably Astra/Fable class. Grok 5 maybe better than anything. We shall see."

The end of 2025 came and went, and so did early 2026. The newest post drops dates entirely and adds two models to the queue. The 6 trillion figure you'll see on every Grok 5 page is Musk's estimate from that conference. xAI has never published it.

That September post is also the most candid thing anyone at xAI has said about the current model. It opens: "Grok 4.7 should be roughly on par with Opus 5.0, not 5.1. Better in some ways, worse in others. We need to fix multimodal performance." Read with the line about Grok 4.9, that's the CEO saying his newest model doesn't yet reach the class of OpenAI's and Anthropic's best, and won't for two more releases.

What Ships Before Grok 5

xAI has put out a new numbered Grok every four to six weeks since July:

Musk's roadmap puts Grok 4.8 and 4.9 next. If each of the three remaining steps takes as long as the last two did, 27 and 40 days, Grok 5 arrives somewhere between mid-December 2026 and mid-January 2027. That's my arithmetic on xAI's own release dates, not a date anyone at xAI has given. It also assumes nothing slips, and so far everything has.

A launch post also isn't the same as the model reaching your app. Grok 4.5 launched on 16 July, and xAI announced six days later that it had reached grok.com, X and the mobile apps. Grok 4.7's launch post lists Cursor, Grok Build and the API. On 30 September, xAI's pricing page still names Grok 4.6 as the model in its plans, and the Grok app's picker shows modes called Fast, Auto, Expert and Heavy rather than model versions. When Grok 5 launches, check where you can actually use it before paying for it.

Should You Wait for Grok 5?

For most people, no.

There's nothing to wait for yet. xAI hasn't given a date, a price or the plans that will get it. Putting a decision off until an unannounced model arrives means putting it off with no end date.

Don't upgrade for it either. SuperGrok is $30 a month and SuperGrok Plus is $100, according to xAI's pricing page, and neither plan card mentions Grok 5. Pay for what those plans do today, or don't pay.

The best model changes every few weeks anyway. xAI has shipped three Grok versions since July, and its own CEO says the current one trails the top models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Whatever you pick today will be overtaken soon, by Grok 5 or by another lab's next release. What matters more is whether your work is tied to one vendor's next model.

Where to Use Grok 4.7 Today

Grok 4.7 is xAI's newest model. xAI calls it its "most capable model for coding and knowledge work" and says it "works longer on difficult tasks" and "checks its own work more carefully". It also says Grok 4.7 is better than Grok 4.6 at creating documents and presentations. Through the API it starts at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, the same price as Grok 4.6.

Within xAI's own products, the launch post points to Grok Build and Cursor, both tools for building software. If you want it for everyday writing and research, it's in izzedo chat. That matters more when a new model launches with big claims attached. The quickest way to find out whether Grok 5 is "better than anything" will be to give it the same question you give everything else and compare the answers.

The Bottom Line

Grok 5 is in training, and that is all xAI has confirmed. Musk's two release targets have passed, and his latest roadmap puts Grok 4.8 and 4.9 first, which on xAI's recent pace means December at the earliest. Don't plan around it, and don't pay for it in advance. Grok 4.7 is out now. I'll update this page the day Grok 5 ships.
